Which Kind of Wellness Week Suits You After Fifty

Spain has hundreds of wellness retreats and they are not the same thing. Here are the four kinds, and which one tends to suit someone in their fifties or sixties.

We run a retreat for people in this age group, so read this with that in mind. We are not neutral. But we spend most of the year talking to women in their fifties and sixties, and a good number of them booked the wrong kind of week first and found us afterwards.

One booking site currently lists 536 wellness retreats in Spain. Very few of them are built with you in mind.

There Are Four Kinds of Wellness Week, and They Are Not Interchangeable

A medical wellness clinic runs on diagnostics. Blood work, doctors, a treatment plan, often two weeks or more. If something specific is wrong and you want it investigated properly, this is the right door. It is expensive, and it feels clinical, because that is what it is.

A spa hotel sells comfort. Treatments, good food, a pool, and nobody asking anything of you at all. Genuinely restful. It will not change how you live once you are home, and it does not set out to.

A yoga retreat is built around the mat. Two practices a day, a shared house, often a younger crowd, usually cheaper. Excellent if yoga is the reason you are going. Less so if what you actually need is sleep, proper food, and someone paying attention to you.

A small-group health retreat sits between the clinic and the holiday. Movement at a level you can actually do, food you would not cook for yourself, walks, rest, and enough structure that the week has a shape. That is what we run.

    What Actually Changes After Fifty

Recovery takes longer. That is the honest headline, and it is the thing most retreat schedules ignore. A programme built for thirty-five year olds will leave you tired rather than restored, and you will go home needing a holiday from your holiday.

Sleep is usually the first thing to come back, and usually the thing that matters most. Joints ask for warm water, walking and time rather than intensity. Appetite responds better to regular, real meals than to restriction.

None of that calls for a gentler week. It calls for a better designed one.

Weight Loss After Fifty Is a Different Conversation

Plenty of guests arrive wanting to lose weight, and that is a perfectly good reason to come. What most of them find is that the weight was a symptom of how life had been going, rather than the problem itself. Years of holding everything together, sleeping badly, eating on the move, putting yourself last.

Deal with those and the weight tends to follow. Deal with the weight alone and it comes back, usually by spring.

The Thing Nobody Says Out Loud

Almost everyone who books asks some version of the same question. Will I be the oldest one there? Will I be the least fit? Will I be the only one on my own?

Most of our guests are women in their fifties and sixties. Most of them come on their own. Many have not exercised properly in a long while. The person you are worried about being is usually sitting next to you at dinner, wondering exactly the same thing.

How to Tell Which One You Need

Ask what fills the day, and ask who will be watching. In a group of thirty you follow a schedule. In a group of eight someone notices that you slept badly, or that your knee is bothering you, and the week bends to fit.

If you want the longer version of this, we wrote separately about how to choose a health retreat in Spain.
