You Don't Need to Be "Fit" to Move. You Just Need to Begin
If you have ever felt like exercise is not for you, you are not alone. Here is why movement does not need to be extreme, structured, or perfect to be powerful.

If You Have Ever Felt Like Exercise "Is Not for You" - Read This
Maybe you have been told you need to get fitter, stronger, leaner, or faster before you are allowed to enjoy movement. Maybe exercise feels like punishment, you compare yourself to others and because you can not do it "perfect" you give up. Maybe you are just tired - mentally, emotionally, physically - and the thought of a workout makes you want to hide under a blanket.
We hear you but here is something you might need to read right now - You do not have to be "fit" to move. You do not need special clothes, a 6-week plan, or a personal best. You just need a body and a willingness to begin gently, in your own way.
At Sana Sana, we believe that movement should be fun and enjoyable rather than a chore so here are a few simple tips to help you rediscover movement and exercise as something joyful, kind, and totally pressure-free.
Start Where You Are - Not Where You Think You "Should" Be
Forget the YouTube routines, online trainers and all the "shoulds," "have to's" and "must's."
This is a mistake that so many beginners make and one that puts them off continuing - they start at a level where they think they should be rather than meeting themselves where they are currently at.
Start with what feels manageable today. A 5 minute walk or quick HIIT blast, a few stretches in bed, a gentle yoga video on your living room floor. That counts.
Movement does not need to be sweaty, structured, or extreme to be effective. It just needs to meet you where you are. Showing up gently is still showing up and you will notice that with consistency, things get easier and therefore, more enjoyable.
Redefine What Movement Means
When we think of "exercise," most of us picture intense classes, strict goals, or gym memberships. But movement, especially when starting out, can be:
- Walking barefoot in your garden
- Dancing while making dinner
- Reaching for the sky and rolling your shoulders
- Floating in water
- Breathing deeply with intention
Let movement become a celebration that uplifts you rather than a performance that drains you.
Choose Joy Over Obligation
If your movement routine feels heavy, harsh, or fuelled by guilt and self loathing, pause and ask yourself - What would genuinely feel good to my body right now?
Believe it or not, your body likes to move - it is one of the fundamental purposes of the body but we make a conscious choice to ignore it. Your desire to move might (and will) change every day and that is okay. Let joy and good, lasting feeling guide your choices. Some days that might be a long countryside walk. Other days, it is resting in child's pose for 10 minutes. Give your body what it naturally likes and needs and be prepared for it to bring you good things in return.
The important thing is to move because it feels good, not because you feel bad.
Honour Your Energy, Not Just Your Calendar
You are not a robot. You are allowed to move differently depending on your mood, your cycle, your sleep, your season of life. Tuning in to your energy and responding with compassion is a beautiful act of self-respect.
Some days, that means walking slowly in silence. Other days, you may feel energised and want to move more. Let your body lead.
Let Movement Be a Conversation, Not a Demand
Movement is not about telling your body what to do. It is about truly listening rather than engaging with your own thoughts about what you think. It is a dialogue and an opportunity to reconnect with the parts of yourself that get ignored in the noise. Sometimes we do the talking rather than stopping and listening to our bodies - we do not even give it a chance to say what it wants.
So instead of "pushing through," try asking:
- What do I genuinely need right now that will serve me in the long run?
- How do I want to feel afterwards?
- Can I meet myself with kindness and gentle encouragement in this moment?
The more we approach movement with curiosity and care, the more it becomes something we actually look forward to.
