What Weight Loss in a Week Actually Looks Like

People ask this by email rather than out loud, usually with an apology attached. Here is an honest answer, without a number.

What Weight Loss in a Week Actually Looks Like

This is the question people ask by email rather than out loud, and usually with an apology attached. How much will I actually lose.

We are not going to give you a number. Here is why, and what tends to happen instead.

Any Figure We Gave You Would Be a Guess

Two people can do exactly the same week and see the scales behave completely differently. Water, sleep, how long things have been building, where you are starting from. None of that is predictable from an email.

Anyone who quotes you a guaranteed figure is selling something.

What Changes First Is Usually Not Weight

Sleep, most often. Then digestion. Then the afternoon slump that most people have stopped noticing because it has been there so long. Puffiness around the face and hands goes early too.

Guests tend to notice those in the first three or four days, well before the scales have much to say.

The Weight Is Usually a Symptom

Most people who come to us wanting to lose weight have not been eating badly out of carelessness. They have been holding a great deal together for a long time. Sleeping poorly, eating standing up, saying yes to everything, putting themselves last for years.

Deal with those and the weight tends to follow, and tends to stay followed. Deal with the weight on its own and it comes back, usually by spring.

What a Week Can Reasonably Do

A week is long enough to break a pattern and show you what a different rhythm feels like in your own body. It is not long enough to undo a decade, and we would not pretend otherwise.

What you take home is the memory of how you felt by Friday, and a clear idea of what produced it.
