    Starting Your Self-Care Journey

One thing we hear from so many of our guests when they arrive is "I need to start taking better care of myself."

For some, that is the very reason they come to stay — a way of taking care of themselves.

As much as we would love our guests to visit every few months, we know that's not sustainable. So how do we start taking better care of ourselves when we're back in the real world, outside of the retreat bubble?

Does it mean sticking to a rigid program where we do "x" amount of things every day? Making sure we rest, get to bed early, breathe in fresh air, go for swims, lounge by the pool for hours, have the occasional siesta, and ensure every single meal is freshly prepared?

While that sounds wonderful, it's not sustainable.

Yes, we can implement self-care weekends where we "do" a retreat at home. But in the long run, and in reality, it takes up way too much time.

At Sana Sana, we believe that real self-care isn't about expensive rituals or doing more. It's about creating simple, meaningful habits that boost your energy, support your body, and reconnect you with yourself.

And not just once in a while, but gently and consistently.

Here are a few ways you can start creating a self-care routine that actually feels good — and lasts.

Start Small — Like, Really Small

Self-care doesn't have to mean adding a long list of things to your already full day.

Start with one tiny shift that feels nourishing:

    • Drinking a glass of water before your morning coffee
    • Sitting in silence for a few minutes before you check your phone
    • Stretching your arms overhead when you wake up
    • Taking time to just sit and listen to your favorite song, noticing how it feels in your body

Small doesn't mean insignificant. It means manageable, doable, and most importantly, sustainable.

Just ONE small change makes a very big difference.

Let It Feel Natural, Not Forced

The best self-care is the kind that feels like a relief, not like something you're "forced" to do or feel you "have to" do.

If meditation isn't your thing, take a quiet walk. If journaling feels heavy, light a candle and simply focus on your breathing.

If cooking energizes you, do that — but if it drains you, find joy in something simpler.

Self-care isn't about the activity, it's all about the intention behind it.

If something brings you comfort and peace, it really is worth doing.

Work With Your Energy, Not Against It

Some days you'll have more energy than others. That's part of the whole "being human" thing.

Build your routine around your natural rhythms:

Having a high-energy day? Do that workout you've been wanting to do, clean the house, or cook something fun and creative.

Having a low-energy day? Wrap yourself up in a blanket with a good book, cancel your plans, or get some rest — because your body probably needs it.

A sustainable routine adapts to you, not the other way around.

But be careful you're not looking for excuses to avoid doing anything (this can easily happen). A good routine means being in tune with your body and your energy levels.

    Nourish Yourself Daily (Without Perfection)

Food plays a huge part in self-care, and it's all about nourishment, not restriction.

Before you prepare something to eat, ask yourself: "What would feel good in my body right now?"

Sometimes the answer will be a warm, home-cooked meal. Other times it will be a coffee and slice of cake with a friend.

    Both are valid.

At the retreat, we use food to not only support digestion and energy but also to be creative and bring people joy. It's about creating your own balanced, fun, and enjoyable approach that keeps you nourished and healthy.

    Make Space for Quiet

If you've been to the retreat, you'll have seen that the program contains enough to keep you busy but also time and space for you to do nothing.

Stillness is such a powerful thing, especially in the noisy and fast-paced world we live in.

You don't need hours of meditation to benefit from quiet.

Try the following to introduce some stillness into your routine:

    • Turning off your phone, computer, or TV for an hour
    • Lying on the floor and doing absolutely nothing
    • Watching the sky for a few minutes each day
    • Reading a good book or listening to gentle music

These tiny moments allow your nervous system to reset - and reconnect you to yourself.

A Simple Self-Care Mantra to Remember

"It doesn't have to be perfect. It just has to be kind."

    Let that be your guide.
